تكشف المراجعة للأدبيات متعددة التخصصات حول التنمية المستدامة عن عدم وجود إطار نظري شامل للفهم للتنمية المستدامة وتعقيداتها. تظهر المراجعة أن تعريفات التنمية المستدامة غامضة؛ وان هناك نقص في التعاريف العملية والخلاف حول ما إذا كان هذا المفهوم يجب أن يستمر فهو غير واضح؛ وهو «يظل موضوعًا مشوشًا ومليئًا بالتناقضات». تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تجميع الأدبيات متعددة التخصصات حول التنمية المستدامة نظريًا، ومن ثم تحديد النتائج حسب فئات مفاهيمية واسعة. لذلك، تستخدم هذه الدراسة التحليل المفاهيمي، الذي يستعرض الأدبيات متعددة التخصصات حول التنمية المستدامة، والتي تتعرف على الأنماط وأوجه التشابه داخلها وكذلك بيان الفرص والتحديات لها، ثم نقوم بحصر الأنماط في الفئات المختلفة ومستقلة المفاهيم، حيث يكون لكل مفهوم معاني مميزة ويمثل أفكارًا متقاربة حول الاستدامة. وتوضح الدراسة مجموعة من المفاهيم معًا وتجميع الإطار النظري لـ "التنمية المستدامة" وكل مفهوم يمثل معاني مميزة للإطار النظري وفق العملية التحليلية لمعرفة اهم التحديات والفرص المستقبلية لتحقيق اهداف التنمية المستدامة. وتوضيح أبرز الاستنتاجات والتوصيات التي توصل اليها هذا البحث.
