يرتكز البحث على فكرة أساسها أن التغير في بيئة الأعمال وظهور الكثير من التحديات المتمثلة بتغير في متطلبات الزبائن ورغباتهم، وانفتاح الأسواق ، ودخول تكنولوجيا المعلومات وظهور الوحدات الاقتصادية المقلدة مما يودي إلى زيادة في حده المنافسة بين الوحدات الاقتصادية ، الأمر الذي يقود بالوحدات الاقتصادية إلى ضرورة البحث عن طرائق أساليب جديدة في التصنيع، من أجل تلبية متطلبات السوق والمحافظة على الزبائن بواسطة إدخال متطلباتهم واحتياجاتهم في عملية التصميم والإنتاج ومن أجل تكوين منتج يلبي طموحاتهم ، ومن أجل نجاح الوحدات الاقتصادية والمحافظة على مركزها في السوق لا بد من تقديم منتجات تلبي احتياجات وتوقعات الزبائن وبكلف مناسبة.
